Our Goal

Lunenburg County Wheels is a registered non-profit organization whose goal is to foster the independence and mobility of residents of western Lunenburg County (Bridgewater, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay and all MODL communities). Our slogan is “Connecting People and Communities.”

Our Operation

We currently (June 2026) provide low-cost, pre-booked, door-to-door rides to area residents of all ages from 8 am to 5 pm weekdays. We have a fleet of six vehicles including four accessible 8-passenger vans, an SUV and a minivan. A roster of full-time and part-time Drivers report to an Executive Director, who in turn is responsible to a volunteer Board of Directors. Staff also include a Dispatcher and part-time Dispatcher.

Our Volunteer Board

Dean Whalen, President: Eric Hustvedt, Secretary; (Treasurer position currently vacant): Colin Cooper; Peter Himmelman; and Maurice Gave. (Officers are elected at an Annual meeting held each spring.)

There are four Board Committees: Operations, Finance, Communications and Human Resources. Each meets monthly. All Board members participate in at least one Committee. Board Committees include non-Board volunteers.

Our Funding

Primary operational funding for LC Wheels, a four-year pilot project, comes from the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works. Funding for four new accessible van, delivered in 2024, came primarily from the Government of Canada, with support from the Province of Nova Scotia. The remainder is from sponsors and private donations.

Staff / Board Structure

Executive Director Daron Lantz supervises a second administrative position, a dispatcher, and our roster of drivers. He reports to our volunteer Board of Directors (which currently meets the first Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m.)

Become involved !

It’s an exciting time to join the Lunenburg County Board or one of its Committees. Now that we have reached full geographical expansion to all western Lunenburg County, we are looking at a variety of service expansions: tours, charters, Saturday hours, assigned days for different parts of our service area.
